India is recognized for its handicraft works like Gharchola, Patola and mirror work from Gujarat, Pashmina from Kashmir, block prints and bandhini from Rajasthan, chikankari and brocade from Uttar Pradesh, Pochampalli from Andhra Pradesh, Kanjivaram from Tamil Nadu and Jamdani and Kantha from West Bengal. There is a good scope for leading industry players to invest and expand in to this segment and gain by catering to world demand and also by generating local demand through awareness generation and skilled craftsmen,who can developmarketable products at a good scale.Scalability,sustainability and self employment can be achieved through skill development in this sector.

Modelama is implementing skill Development in the handicraft sector with an aim to skill local artisans in developing marketable products through locally available resources .An important project in this area is in the North East where various market friendly design-intensive products like Laptop/File Covers & Ladies Bag, Newspaper Stand, Basket /dustbin ,etc.are being developed by local Ladies & Market Linkage Support is being provided to them for encouraging self-employment.
